You could reach Atanwala after a drive of nearly an hour & half from Raththota town in Matale. Situated in very close proximity to Riverston peak & Mini World's End , it is certainly a location you must not miss out.
Atanwala is from another era.
People are not accustomed to the modern day culture so much. Most of the villagers are traditional farmers. Some have stepped in to the Hospitality industry from a recent time working as hiking guides. Their in-depth knowledge & the home grown skill set have made them the best option for hikers who want to explore the surrounding Mandigala , Meemure , Sera Ella , Duwili Ella & the other known famous sites.
The soil is so fertile. Anything could grow here. Since the terrain is hilly ,there is no option but to make use of the landscape. The paddy fields are not the endless fields but rather "Helmalu or the Cascade system. The view of such paddy fields is just amazing. Other than rice , people of Atanwala also grow vegetables. Naturally they are self sufficient.
There is a bus route & a bus service that connects the village to the nearby Towns. However they are so used to walk & they walk miles & miles per day. Be very careful when you ask for a distance from one of the villagers. They would claim " it is just so close by or it is a ten minutes distance" . In reality it could easily turnout to be a real hike of 30 minutes. Don't blame them since their idea of walking is not the traditional thinking of you & me.
The place is a marvel. It is so green & every where you could spot a place to have a nice bath from a clean water flow. It is one of the windiest places that you will come across in the country. If you are a Bird lover it is a place for you. The village is one entrance to the very famous Meemure village. Aranwala is a hikers wet dream. Bordering the Knuckles range, your options for hiking is simply way too much.
If you do your scouting properly , you will not miss the chance of having Fresh Toddy of a lifetime. One way to summarize is " Every thing in Atanwala is authentic, simple & totally unforgeable "
